Due to concerns over OSHA compliance and employee safety a regional bakery contacted Transmission Engineering (TECO) along with Machine Guard and Cover Company (MGC), to review several chain, sprocket and bearing covers on machinery at the bakery. TECO and MGC measured the guards in most immediate need of upgrade. The existing sheet metal guards were not OSHA compliant.
Many of the existing sprocket and bearing covers were noisy and not easy to clean. After the site evaluation it was determined that the bakery's cupcake 90 degree depositor was the best candidate for upgrade, due to the danger, condition, appearance, and noise of the existing sheet metal guard. This particular guard had no back plate which enabled fingers or hands to be in dangerously close proximity to the chain and sprocket mechanisms. This presented an employee safety risk and was clearly out of OSHA compliance. Additionally, there was duct tape and welded patches on the guard that left many crevices for food debris to collect on the original guard, presenting a potential health hazard. It was decided that a smooth, bright, safety yellow ABS guard would be the best possible upgrade. The new guard was installed on the cupcake 90 degree depositor on December 13, 2011. The entire change over took less than 2 hours.
